Dry cag and deck vs Cag deck

Hi all just looking for different points of view on this one,

I paddled for a while with the dry cag then, put the deck in between, then put the other bit of the dry cag on top option. Untill I tried a cag deck and found getting changed time cut in half and staying just as dry?

I also worked it out that buying a cag deck is cheaper than getting the dry cag and deck. And seeing as most paddlers out there need all the money they can get to afford this lifestyle we chose!!

Perfect world

Summer = Shortie Cag Deck

Winter = (a thermal or three) + Normal Cagdeck

My question is how come they are not more popular?

Jay,

Cag decks aren't massivly popular in Ireland but loads of folks use them in the uk. I'm a huge fan of using a cag deck while freestyling / surfing because it provides loads of movement and just as dry.

As for creek boating & river running there have been issues raised regarding the possiblity of getting pinned/ broched and your deck being trapped against an object. In the case of a two piece you can (however difficult) still manage to free yourself / step out while the spray deck remains trapped on/betewwn object. In a cag deck this simply is not possible. If your cag deck gets snagged you are in for bad times. Its up to you to decided for your self.

On a recnt course Rob Coffey told me about a time he encountered a strainer and a branch went throught pierced his deck trapping inside his boat. Only for the fact that he was using seprates he was able to escape.

 So why add to that list Undecided When you get pinned you put others at risk trying to save you.

Cag decks are well suited to playboating and if you predominantly playboat then go for it.

If it's Creeking your at don't be stupid get a good drysuit and a half decent deck.

Change your layers underneath to suit.

Creeking situations can often include long periods in the water. Swims, pins and boat recovery or worse still long walk outs.

If ya can afford it get all the above. Cag deck for playboating, drysuit for creeking and plaboating in the winter months.

Never test the depth of the water with both feet.
