Apologies for my generic thread but I’d really appreciate some advice from the experts. I live 15 minutes drive from the sea, have been kayaking before and now want to buy my own. My partner is interested too so am considering getting a Tandem kayak so we can head out together.I’ve not yet considered how to transport it! I suspect I’ll use a roof rack, it’s cheaper. My car, however, is a Ford Ka

I think the Necky Manitou II is ideal, albeit very expensive, as it facilitates solo and tandem kayaking. Not sure though, what do you lot think? I envisage using the kayak for river, coast and eventually sea.

Thinking of:

Perception Horizon 2

BIC Trinidad Sit on top (really unsure about this one)

Necky Manitou II (preferred but very expensive)

Hi Bravo,

I think the main decision you need to make is whether or not you want a sit in kayak or a sit on top kayak.

If it's a sit in, then you will need to look at the Horizon 2 or Manitou 2.  If it's a sit on top then you will need to look at the Trinidad or similar.

Pros for the sit ins: More streamlined, more speed, better tracking

Pros for the sit on tops: More Stable (easier to use)

Thank you Colm. When using a sit on top are they prone to filling up with water? I suspect I'll depart from the beaches mostly and going against the waves will likely cause some water to get in!

Hi Bravo,

The sit on tops are prone to getting water onto the deck but most come with drain holes positioned just above the waterline to allow any water to drain out once you are past any shore-break.  There is virtually no chance of the sit on top filling with water and sinking due to it's sealed in design.

Thank you.

Since my car is very small, I'm looking into inflatable kayaks too since I assume I can pack these away rather than needing to invest in a roof rack and what not.

Are these generally ok too or are they more recreational? As above, would like to use in the sea, coastline and rivers. If ok, any tandem or solo recommendations?

if ur only intrested in paddleing around all day in the see not doing anyting go for a sit on top.bt these are useless for anytin else.and about the tandom i stroungly erge you not to buy a tandom as kayaking is very much about freedom and when ur nt the nly one making the decissons that freedom is lost.lol.soppy bt u know wat io mean..........if it was me id get a gp plastic i know you will hav 2 get a roof rack bt a gp(dagger gt) can surf isnt that slow and if you do progress it can change over to rivers ...the worst ting that can hapen is you go out buy a boat and a few mounths later find out u want to do some different type of paddling and u cant cuse ur boat restricts you from doing so...........gud luck

Thanks eiget. I understand what you mean about the freedom allowed to oneself when using a solo tandem. That's why the Necky Manitou II is on my most likely list since it facilitates both solo and tandem kayaking. The only thing preventing me from getting that is the cost and the portability. I'd like an inflatable if it was just as kayak-able! Not sure if they're frowned up generally or seen as things to be used in lakes or playing at the beach in!

Necky still hasn't arrived, it's being imported by a reseller in Fermoy and this is the third time he's had to reschedule :( Now hoping to have it this Friday
