Paddles as hand lugggage

Hi all,

Does anyone know if it is possible to carry paddles on an airplane as hand luggage? Im off to the states next month and was thinking about bringing back some new paddles. ...wont be worth it though if I have to pay the £120GBP to put them in the hold.
